A 17-year-old football player from Warren Township in Somerset County was
fatally stabbed early Thanksgiving morning in lower Manhattan, according
to the New York City police department.

Rocco Rodden, a junior offensive lineman at St. Joseph Regional High
School in Montvale, was identified as the victim.

A source at the NYC Office of the Deputy Commissioner for Public
Information said police responded to a 9-1-1 call at 96 Lafayette St. at
1:50 a.m. Thursday, where officers observed two stabbing victims. Rodden
was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The
second victim, a 19-year-old, was stabbed in the torso and is in stable
   condition.

The suspect, Gianluca Bordone, a 19-year-old from New York, has been
arrested and charged with manslaughter and assault, according to DCPI.

Dan Marangi, former head coach at St. Joe’s, attended a team meeting with
   football players Friday morning.

“It’s tough. We just had a little team gathering this morning to kind of
get together and kind of bond and kind of lean on each other,” Marangi
said. “I let everyone know that I’m there for them. They got a lot of
people that care about them. We throw around the word ‘family’ and
‘brotherhood’ and that’s just not an acronym. That’s just what we stand
for. It’s what my program always preaches — brotherhood and family — and
it’s for times like this. It’s a lifetime bond.”

St. Joseph Athletic Director Reggie Sainte Rose said there will be a
prayer service on Monday and counselors will be available on campus.

“We’re just in a state of shock. The entire St. Joe’s community is in a
state of shock,” Sainte Rose told NJ Advance Media. “We had the boys
together this morning, the football team, for a prayer service and time to
reflect and get together and stay strong for each other. Prayers just go
out to the family right now. It’s a tough time.”
