   My wife (who is the musician of the family) also suggested that it is   
   for a child's instrument.  She says that would also explain the   
   inexpensive-looking material the case is mad from.  From the shape of   
   the "shoulders," she also thought it could be for something in the   
   viol family, such as a viola de gamba.
