Steve Suffet's newest CD, "Low Rent District," was released in New York City
this past Thursday, September 25. CD Baby, the on-line music retailer, will
handle all Internet and mail sales at this time, and they should have copies
ready for purchase within two weeks. Other distributors may be added later.
Otherwise, the CD will be available from the artist in person. The price is
$15.
Steve Suffet is best described as an old fashioned folk singer in the
People's
Music tradition. His repertoire is a mixture of railroad songs, trucker
songs,
miner and mill hand songs, cowboy songs, union songs, old time country
music.
ballads, blues, ragtime, Gospel, bluegrass, topical-political songs, and
whatever else tickles his fancy. "Low Rent District" proves the point. Eight
of
the eighteen tracks are songs Steve wrote himself in various traditional
folk
styles, and four are his arrangements of traditional folk songs. The
remaining
tracks include a cowboy song from 1911, a Carter Family song, a song by
contemporary songwriter Si Kahn, two little know Woody Guthrie songs, and
Guthrie's version of a traditional Gospel song. There is quite a variety of
genres, styles, themes, and moods. You will find ragtime, Gospel, blues,
old-time country music, union songs, peace songs, an Anglo-Irish version of
an
ancient Scottish ballad, and even a country waltz which tells the true story
of
how Steve met his wife forty years ago. The title song is about urban
gentrification and the loss of affordable goods, services, and housing.
The Peoples' Voice Cafe in New York City will host a concert on Saturday
evening, January 31, 2009, to celebrate the release of "Low Rent District."
The
Peoples' Voice Cafe is now located in the Community Church of New York at 40
East 35th Street in Midtown Manhattan. The show starts at 8:00 PM. Steve's
good
friend Anne Price will be sharing and alternating sets with him.
