XPost: misc.misc, rec.music.celtic, nf.arts       XPost: nf.general       From: dalton@nfld.com              Last night (Wednesday) I went to a concert by The Once with special       guest comic storyteller Andy Jones at Gower Street United Church.       The Once wowed everyone with a mix of Christmas songs and       folk songs, and some folk Christmas songs. They are Geraldine       Hollett, Phil Churchill and Andrew Dale, and they were joined       by Greg Walsh on some numbers. They especially impressed       me with their vocal harmonies. I will have to get their self-titled       debut CD and when I do I'll review it on here. But they have       already won several MusicNL awards and are nominated for at least one       ECMA, I think folk/roots group.              After that concert I went to The Ship Pub for much of the open       mic set and the last headline set of Folk Night. Michael El-Go       and Peter MacGuire, Duncan Cameron, and Andrew O'Brien       all impressed me with their open mic sets, and then Sherry       Ryan and Friends got up and did a strong set of country folk.       Sherry Ryan said she is playing again on Dec. 28, I think at       The Ship again. Her friend Joe Belly said he will release a       new CD early in 2010.              The Skydiggers are at The Ship tomorrow night (Friday).              Next Wednesday (Dec. 9) Folk Night at The Ship features       Allan Ricketts and Fred Jorgensen.              THIRD ANNUAL FAS WASSAIL (Christmas Carol Sing Along)       is Dec. 12 at Cochrane St. United Church, start time TBA.       (See http://www.nlfolk.com .)              Tonight my ISP's mailserver seems to be down so I can't check       my e-mail, and haven't for a couple of days. So if you have       e-mailed me you will have to wait until tomorrow night for a reply.              David              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
