   They actually referred to it as a "Scottish Folksong", despite the fact   
   that it refers to Yarmouth in the second line.  It was indeed written   
   by Ewan McColl.

   You could argue that Shoals of Herring has now entered the tradition,   
   on the grounds that most people who sing it have no idea who wrote it,   
   and it has begun to generate independent variants.  Scottish though?   
   The man that wrote it cam fae Salford didn't he?
