   I run into that same thing from time to time. It used to bother   
   me a bit, but I've (mostly) come to accept that some people just   
   think differently and that's okay.   
      
   I most often encounter this difference when giving an extra amount   
   of cash over the total so I can get back a reduced amount of   
   change (or fewer $1 bills). For example, if the total due is   
   $4.77 I may give the clerk $5.02 to get back only a quarter. At   
   times I have to explain it. On the other hand, I enjoy it when   
   the clerk stops for a moment, and then I can see the light go off   
   in their head.
