How does the dog act when boarded -- is he a lunatic if he sees other dogs
   in the next cage?

There are professionals who will come in just long enough to check on a dog,
feed him, take him for a walk, etc -- whatever services you ask for --
without actually staying in the house. A local vet might recommend someone.
