   I'm sure *you* know but other seem to miss it so I can't help but add -   
   Teach them what you DO want.  And make sure you don't substitute your   
   human knowledge for that teaching.  People tend to think dogs understand   
   something because they don't understand dogs.  A cowering reaction does   
   not mean "I know I've done wrong" It does mean "I know you are going to be   
   upset."  That knowledge does not mean the dog understands how to avoid   
   that   
   upsetness.
