   You seem to have a preconceived notion many owners are complete deadbeats,   
   where in reality most are simply trying to do the right thing.   
      
   Out in the bush here there are lots of nasty snakes including the Australian   
   Brown snake which has enough powerful venom in one bite to kill 30 adults.   
   Yet despite this, there have been no stories of dogs or cats being bitten.   
   It must happen, it's just not regular enough to be common knowledge.   
      
   I think cats know when they are up against something they can't handle. The   
   same applies, I suspect, to dogs.  I know of quite a few weekend farmers on   
   15 to 25 acre farms who have had no trouble with the ubiquitous Brown or   
   Black snake (the latter of which has enough venom to kill with one bite).   
      
   These snakes do share a common trait ie, they take -off when they hear   
   something large coming,..until they are cornered,..then it's another story.
