   If it can talk a few of the San Diego States and Boise States out west into   
   joining, it can still hang on as a football conference.   
   I think the key team here is Stanford - if it leaves, the others might as well   
   start making phone calls; the best it could hope for is to become a   
   Patriot-style conference where your decent football teams play in another   
   conference.   
   ("But Stanford won't leave without Cal" - why? Explain how being in two   
   different conferences doesn't stop Florida-Florida State and Georgia-Georgia   
   Tech from happening every season.)
