To expand a bit on what Captain Infinity wrote, the first time you post to the
moderated newsgroup, you're sent an automated email with the terms of use (no
story ideas, no flaming, etc.) that you're required to agree to and return.
Until that's done, your post won't even show up in the queue to be moderated.
Some people do use throw-away emails but it should be one that you check once
   in
a while in case a moderator bounces a post for some reason. After you agree to
the terms, any posts you've sent should enter the queue and the moderator can
pass them. Your first 20-something posts will still be hand moderated but
   after
that they should post automatically except for new threads which are always
   hand
moderated. These days Amy is the most active moderator and she moderates at
least two or three times a day so there are fewer issues with posting delays.

As for your post being 'filtered', from what I've read over the years, a
moderator cannot 'bounce' a post without assigning a reason and an email is
automatically sent to the poster with that information.

As for spam...I don't think Usenet groups are a major target these days. But,
   to each his own.
