When watched back-to-back, the things that everyone hated and seemed
long and drawn out tend not to seem so long or drawn out and therefore
don't seem so bad. I guess this is because when watching on TV you've
spent a week anxiously waiting for the next bit of the story and then
all you get is more of what you hated about last week's episode.

This was definitely true of B5 S5 with the Byron arc and Garibaldi's
alcoholism. I remember both seemed to drag on forever when it was
first aired, but watching the DVDs wasn't anywhere near as painful.
Also maybe because I could amuse myself during Byron's group
singalongs with the knowledge that he was going to die. :-)

The same can be said about Buffy S6, although personally I still
found Willow's drug/magic abuse tedious, overtly self-righteous and
way over emphasised. It still came across as a huge mallot with
"DRUGS ARE BAD" written in huge fluorecent letters: very unsubtle
and IMO insults the intelligence of the viewer - or that's how I
felt anyway. The antics of the Trio were far more bearable on
   DVD though.
   Simon.
