   They are taking their cue from Superman III, where Red Kryptonite was   
   introduced as making Superman evil. They just decided to make it work   
   that way everytime.   
      
   Although, I wonder where he got a new ring with Red Kryptonite, since   
   the original he bought was destroyed in the episode where they   
   introduced it.  Shattered with a sledgehammer if I recall properly.
