Yup, this is definitely a sign of maturity (I don't say growing up, as some
never do, they just grow old), as is the realization that Star Trek is a
horse opera set in space. Forgetting the great acting, directing, humor,
character development, special effects, production values and story line,
what sets B5 apart from all other major sci-fi epics (like the entire SW and
ST series) is that he does not paint a picture of a utopian lifestyle,
replete with technology that far exceeds anything likely to happen by the
time frames they are set in. In its stead, he paints a galaxy filled with
very fallible life forms, and about the only concession to hi end technology
is the jump gates and jump engines. Without some technology to allow FTL
travel, no space based sci-fi is possible. There are no transporters,
holodecks, phasers and the like. The people are real, with real flaws and
real issues. Once you grow up, a simple black hats vs. white hats scenario
isn't enough to feed the mind, you need more meat and less dessert.
