   Luke killing Vader would have been the final stage of turning Luke to   
   the Dark Side and (as the quote says) joining Palptine in Vader's   
   place. Palpatine had become aggrogant and over-confident in his   
   abilities in the 20 years since turning Vader ... and he got it VERY   
   wrong, which was lucky for the Star Wars galaxy.
