I'd recommend either some of the juveniles that he wrote for Scribner's:
     _Citizen of the Galaxy_
     _Tunnel in the Sky_
     _Have Spacesuit, Will Travel_
or else a collection of his short fiction:
     _The Green Hills of Earth_
     _The Menace From Earth_
_The Man Who Sold the Moon_

Maybe one from each category would be a good way to get your feet
wet. The collection _The Past Through Tomorrow_ contains a wide range
of his fiction, but it's rather large, so I wouldn't recommend it to
somebody who's not sure if she'd like his work.

Others have mentioned a divide between "Early Heinlein" and "Late
Heinlein". This is stylistically true, although somewhat deceptive,
since the two had a considerable period of overlap.

The works that I recommended above are all part of his early period.
