Yes on "here are my opinions on political matters, which       :: would clearly lead to utopia if they were implemented, because you       :: need to know them." No on "here are my opinions on group sex, etc.       :: etc."              : Only if you think the opinions on politics in "Troopers" are actually       : Heinlein's opinions, and not just a thought experiment.              I really dont see much evidence that Heinlein thought a "utopia" (as in,       optimal, stable social structure) was possible. Nor that the ST society       was all that long-term stable. Any more than the society which created       Coventry was utopian (see Methuselah's Children), or that in The Moon is       a Harsh Mistress was (see the end of the novel, or see The Cat Who       Walked Through Walls), in any fundamental sense.                     Wayne Throop throopw@sheol.org http://sheol.org/throopw              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
