   I found a copy of the gold covered "Trilogy" novelisation (containing   
   Episodes IV - VI) published around the time George Lucas was working on   
   Episode III. In the front is an introduction by George Lucas and the very   
   first paragraph says:   
      
        "From the outset I conceived Star Wars as a series of six films."   
      
   Not nine, not twelve ... only six ... or at least only six now!  ;-)
