   Despite what they like to claim, the Maori weren't the first people to   
   arrive in New Zealand. The first people here, although there weren't a   
   huge number of them, were the Moriori who also came from the Pacific   
   islands. The Maori arrived later and went about killing (and in some   
   cases eating) the Moriori.   
      
   So all idiocy about Maori deserving special treatment and compensation   
   because Europeans stole their land and treated Maoris badly is a load   
   of greedy, hypocritical crap. All the land the Government has given   
   back to Maori trusts in recent years should really be given back to the   
   Moriori (almost none of which still exist, even in watered down,   
   inter-racial form).   
      
   There are even some claims that ancient Greek and Roman sailors got   
   down here well before the Moriori.
