   one of the old try and true manga axiom, is the changing of the story   
   setting w/ respect to the change of (current) season, in January you   
   will have manga story about new year festival and rice cake, Feb will be   
   the Valentine day, April with cherry blossom and the school graduation,   
   June is the wedding season, Fall is the school sports and culture   
   festival, December is X'mas. so what do we have for September issues of   
   manga magazines that come out in August?  swimsuits, swimsuits and more   
   of the same, every year and never fails, even a bigger topic than Koshin   
   baseball,  just about every magazines are dotted with them.   
      
   the Sept Afternoon freebie is a hand fan, (w/ the baseball manga on it,   
   August, again, etc.)  I don't know if it can be any more nerdy, consider   
   the target readers of Afternoon are late teens and beyond, to hold in   
   your hand basically a manga pencil board with a hole in it for your   
   thumb to fan yourself.  I wouldn't be caught dead w/ it in public   
   anywhere in the world.   
      
   by compaison, next month's freebie is an alternative Mushishi book cover   
   that is made of cloth, attention Chris...

   this one has me ROTFL, not only we are finally getting some well   
   deserved and long over due sexual tensions, (yeah right, blame it all on   
   the nerdy guys now.) we also have a close encounter of the nerdy kind   
   between the Japanese otakus and the American counter parts, apparently   
   the Japanese are finally realize gaijins can be as nerdy as they are, or   
   even more so, (because they don't know it is nerdy, but think it is cool   
   or trendy instead.) and working it into the story line with the upcoming   
   comket is simply brilliant, yes, Japanese otakus in normal life don't   
   walk around advertise themselves as such, something none Japanese seems   
   to have a hard time getting.

   something is terribly wrong here, the end of the world or worse, I can   
   only assume Utatane knew the 7.2 earthquake is coming, and TURNS OUT 24   
   PAGES for this chapter, and let me tell you, AFAIR, this has never   
   happen before.  enjoy it.

   for me, still the best title on Afternoon two years running.  the story   
   is so good it will still be enjoyable even in novel or audio medium w/o   
   the pictures.

   but, the best value of this issue, w/o a doubt, is this chapter, 8   
   gorgeous color pages of all 4 YKK girls, what else, in swimsuits by the   
   beach, what makes it even better is the use of good, thick soft paper   
   that are different from every other color pages in this issue, (none of   
   the cheap, shinny glossy thin type.) I don't know if the compilation's   
   color pages use the same papers or not, if not then you should check it   
   out just to see the difference, (comparable to GITS2 paper quality. rare   
   for manga magazine which like to use recycle paper.)   
      
   as to the story, what story?  just 4 girls swimming around and having a   
   good time, there is a reason this author can keep this up for 10+ years,   
   he is basically ignoring his own story setup and having a free ride   
   every month.
