   basketball's popularity did increase about that time in Japan, but it   
   was not because of Slam Dunk, it started to get popular because of   
   Michael Jordan.  Slam Dunk and Dear Boy in a way were responses to the   
   popularity of NBA in Japan at that time.  there is no doubt those two   
   shows increased the popularity, but they are not the origin or starting   
   point.
