The anime was actually a phenomenon, but it's       only among otakus except that the popularity among fans made       news even in the mainstream media and many people other than       anime fans got to know the title by name. I think the effects       this anime had on the society are anime boom then and the       emergence of "anime fan"(which is later to be deemed to be       identical with anime otaku).              >       > Lost Paradise: the novel, together w/ the adapted manga and live       > movie, increase the Japan suicide rate for a period of times.              IIRC, the movie featured 役所広司 and the story is about adultery.              >       > Hikaru no Go: after a steady downward trend of people playing Go in       > the 90s due to the explosion of video game and internet, this manga       > increase the people playing Go in Japan by millions.              Actually, Go had become a game only for old people long before       the advent of Nintendo and that is one of the aspects which       made the reactions of Hikaru and Hikari, or others, when they       heard or learned about Go really funny or interesting in the       early chapters of the manga. They don't know about Go at all       but it's not something you can ignore completely.              >       > Battle Royal: increase violence among youth, w/ notable crimes       > attribute it as a factor.              Really? It made news for its radical concept, but....              >       > Sea Monkey: together w/ the live movie increase the Japan coast guard       > enrollment.       >       > Nodame Cantabile: increase interest in classical music?              I don't know it's a fact or not but I have read someone wrote       that a certain famous archaeology professor said that all       female new students of his department say they want to learn       archaeology because they have read 王家の紋章(ouke no monshou)       and male students, Indiana Jones.              >       > Any others?              動物のお医者さん(doubutsu no oisha-san/doctor of animals):              It seems this manga caused the Siberian Husky boom in the late       '80s or early '90s. There really were a lot of Siberian Huskys       in the town. And caused some problems like the sudden price       rise of the dogs and collapse later.       I heard the ratio of female to male in students of the Faculty       of Veterinary Medicine of Hokkaido University (the school the       manga explicitly based on and perhaps the most prestigious       veterinary school in Japan) greatly reversed.              美味しんぼ(oishinbo):              For good or bad, this manga intelligibly affected the way       Japanese see their foods and their safety. And this manga       fueled considerably "gourmet boom".              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
