But you'd think that somebody at the top would do a bit of       research on what fans think of a translator/adaptor's previous work before       putting them on the payroll.              >> > Ledouxism: "Sacred jewel shards"       >> > Every other adaptation team: "Shikon shards"       >>       >> Interesting, but I look for more heinous examples of retranslation than       >> that.       >       > I just can't stand the way she re-writes dialog and has no ear for a       > character's voice or even normal English dialog.              I don't know if she's lived all her life in California, but I suspect that       may have something to do with it, given how much slang from the region       that she (ab)uses in her work. However, when you stop to think about it,       "sacred jewel" doesn't roll off the tongue quite as easy as "Shikon," does       it?              >> [I think the GTO manga is ruined.]       > I meant the manga, but you think it was ruined? I'm just curious because I enjoyed it, but I do want to       > hear other opinions on it so feel free to diss it with details.              It's drowning in overAmericanization, and not even very good types, like       references to the 70's band Bread (who the hell are they? Exactly.). It       just doesn't read to me at all like how any of the people I've encountered       in my life really talk. I have to admit that the versions of the anime       I've seen have been digitized versions shown at a club, complete with       English credits. I don't know if those were the real Tokyopop subs or       not, but if they were, they were a lot less overstylized than the manga       was, and I enjoyed it much more as a result.       --        Dave Watson, Severed Heads Liberation Front (_Stretcher_ CD-R--sevcom.com)       Frezier Balzoff (aka Ottawa), Ontario, Canada Email--shlf [at] ncf [dot] ca        My music and anime webpage: http://eyevocal.ottawa-anime.org/        Craig Hall--1975-2005--Good friend and kindred wild spirit.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
