That is       > highly unlikely, since that would mean all the Japanese manga artists       > are hoarding their art, that was returned to them by the company.              It seems at least mangakas think their original drawings       belong to them and I think, usually, they can rightfully claim       the ownership of what they have drawn for the companies that       use the drawings to publish their manga magazine or something.       The matter is that usually, if not necessarily, mangaka hold       the copyrights to their works and the publishers have only       limited rights to publish the works, whereas I think it is       often different cases in American comics like Superman where       it seems publishers or other things hold the copyrights. And       to make things worse, it seems publishers tend to keep the       original drawings [(生)原稿 or 原画 in Japanese] with them       because they often use the drawings again for future       publication like compiled edition. So, I think you can deduce       two reasons: 1) if your manga is popular, the possibility that       you need them to reissue the manga (and maybe it's not from       the original publisher) and maybe you would want to retouch       them for new publication is high. 2) the publisher has them       and they can't dispose of them at will.              >       > I would like to find art from some of my favorite Anime-turned-manga       > series' like Tenchi Muyo! or Sakura Taisen.              On the second thought, mangaka holds only partial copyrights       for the titles like the above. But I think these original       drawings are still the mangaka's.              --              dareka dareka@inter7NS.jp              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
