   IIRC, the mangaka and the Japanese publisher share the copyrights,   
   though the mangaka may own his/her original characters and   
   thus can take it to another publisher for future comics.   
      
   Whereas Marvel and DC Comics own their characters and   
   only commission artists to work on them (i.e. work for hire),   
   so those artists don't own anything.
