I have taken a variety of martial arts from a variety of Asian
countries, and they've all worn the gi (or it's equivalent name) with
left over right. However, one's belt is most often to be tied with
the knot open to the right. A teacher of kung fu (I've forgotten his
title now) informed me that, by tradition, this would confuse evil
spirits who would try to enter your body.

Exactly *how* these evil spirits would be confused by a belt and robe,
when they could just zip right up to the nose or eyes is beyond me,
but there you have it. I don't make the rules, I just report them.
