When I first came to Japan, I got valentine chocolates from my _boss_
(a woman), but she made painfully clear how much she resented it, or at
least felt uncomfortable about it -- she practically chucked them across
   the room at me!

For better or for worse, I've noticed, a lot of the little traditions
and touches that made things seem "japanese" have basically died out at
my company in the past few years; it's starting to seem almost like any
american company (though non-japanese only account for 0.5% of the
employees). To some degree this is slightly sad -- the world is
becoming more homogeneous -- but at least I don't have to punch the
   timeclock anymore. :-)
