   Lucky you.  I did.  It cemented a profound loathing for Judy Blume's   
   books that hasn't entirely left me to this day.  I found her female   
   characters unbelievable -- which is to say that they were all deathly   
   worried about issues I found either incomprehensible or irrelevant at age   
   11.  (And nobody ever saved the world in a Judy Blume book.  Kiss of   
   death right there to an eleven-year-old busy devouring Lloyd Alexander,   
   Susan Cooper, C.S. Lewis and Diana Wynne Jones.  I might regard Blume   
   differently today, of course ... but I still think the   
   not-saving-the-world thing might tell against her ...)
