Stories have to have a bit of unlikely coincidences.
One couple knew each other before Genskiken. The girl would have had
nothing to do with the club but for the presence of her old childhood
   boyfriend.
One couple have complimentary interests, both in doing cosplay, one in
making costumes and the other as a cosplay performer nearly a
   perfect match.
One couple ends up both working in the industry, one as editor
   and one as artist.

Nothing is less likely in such a small group, but imagine the
story if the club had not had these strong personalities interacting
but merely continued as before showing past achievements and resting
on laurels. It would have ended when the Student Council decided that
Genshiken was an encubrance and the story would have been over or
   something completely different.

From what i have read in manga and seen in anime a depressing
story where none of the girls connected with any of the boys would not
be acceptable to the publishers. We have heterosexuality re-affirmed
despite the fantasies of the girls about some of the boys. And everyone
gets a job so it is truely an unlikely and idealised story driven by
   coincidences.

As for mushy, there is no accounting for tastes.
