What's your take on series length?

For my part, if there's an actual story to it, like Basara, I don't mind
the author taking 20+ volumes to finish the series (although I do get
annoyed when they're obviously dragging it out). But for the episodic
high school comedy type stories, like YamaNade and HanaDan, I really
wish they'd end the stories in about 10 volumes or less.

I find recently that I don't really like collecting stuff anymore that
doesn't have a pretty obvious goal/end in sight (either it ended in
Japan or it has an actual story that indicates it will end when a
certain event happens that the characters are working toward). And
that seems to be true even if I really like the series, which is sad
considering one of the genres I tend to like a lot is the episodic
shoujo high school drama and/or comedy fluff.

So, I've kind of petered off in collecting series like that lately.
Nodame is stuck at 6 right now, YamaNade is at 10, HanaDan is at 19 and
HanaKimi is at 14 on my shelf. And I really have no desire to buy any
more of any of those at the moment, even though I like all 4 of those
series and they have been released in R1 pretty far past those volumes.

   Perhaps a large part of that is I'm quickly running out of shelf space;
I've already filled two 116qt (~110 liters) storage bins with manga and
shoved them into a corner in the basement, not wanting to throw them
away because they were expensive, but not really sure what to do with
them now that I've read them (I only store away the ones that I've
read). Part of me (the collector in me, I suppose) wants to keep them,
but part of me wants to get rid of them somehow, and perhaps recoup some
of the money spent on them, as unlikely as that may be.

Anyway, dangit Viz, release the last two volumes of Basara already!!!

(I should be able to get the last volume of Kimi wa Petto/Tramp Like Us
   here soon, yayyayyay!)
