   Oh, like they were in 1996? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that   
   isn't their motivation at all.

   While I won't go so far as to say I'll never buy manga in an electronic   
   format (kindles and such have apparently approved the experience and the   
   tech will get better and cheaper), I will go so far as to say that at the   
   moment I can't even be bothered to follow something free I have an interest   
   in (like Rin-Ne) in an electronic format. It's hard on the eyes and not as   
   comfortable as having a real book. I am hardly the only one who considers   
   paper to be a value-add, so your generalisation is unfounded.
