   It has more to do with the fact that women been banned from Japanese   
   theatre in the 1600s. The laws were loosened in the early 20th century   
   allowing women to appear in Noh and cinema but they are still prohibited   
   by from performing Kabuki. Thus, all female roles in Kabuki are played by   
   men, some of whom specialize in playing female roles.
