   The truth is less impressive: a short sword is more practical than a full   
   length sword for indoor, close quarters fighting. This is probably the   
   origin of the custom of leaving long swords at the entrance while keeping   
   the companion blades (short swords and knives) close at hand.   
      
   It just so happens that a short blade is more "practical" than a full
