   Well, the advantage of AltaVista (before one of the programmers fucked it   
   up) was that you could use symbols to enhance your searches.   
      
   + would add words, phrases or 'grouped terms' to search for   
   - would remove sites with certain words, phrases or 'grouped terms' from   
   the search list   
   "" would group words into phrases, of course   
   () would make AltaVista search for terms grouped within 100 words of each   
   other (ie (strawberry... ...jam))   
      
   It was a very efficient system until someone bungled it and I don't believe   
   that anyone has matched or surpassed this method since.
