        Fushigi no Kuni no Bird Manga Summary:   
      
        Scottish adventuress Isabella Bird journeys to Japan in 1878 a   
   nd becomes the first Westerner to travel to many remote locations,   
   heading northward towards Hokkaido to study the aboriginal Ainu people.   
     Based on a true story.   
      
          As it says based on the True Story of Isbella Bird in early   
   Meji Japan traveling up the Western Coast of Japan to Hokkaido.   
   I have read the book and it is a good one though old and perhaps   
   hard to find,   
          Reading the manga or the book about her will be a great   
   experience for it shows how much Japan has progressed since   
   Bird took her arduous journey.

   > of Hokkaido then called Yezo.  Amazing traveler putting   
   > up with very difficult conditions in a pre-modern setting.   
   > Lots of use as reference to the conditions in Meji, Japan   
   > 10 years or so into the reforms with much of the old Japan   
   > being observed and reported in detail, travels among the   
   > Ainu of Yezo.   
      
   	And the manga is online.  I just looked into the first chapter
