Assembly and disassembly under tightly controlled conditions.

The point here was assembly and disassembly of a chemical plant
(on Mars), which is _quite_ different from putting together an
   automobile at an assembly line.

If I am mistaken, and if you know of a robot which can, let's say,
routinely replace pumps in a chemical plant environment (including
loosening and tightening flanges, exchanging gaskets, testing for
leaks, cleaning up afterwards etc.), please give details. And
please make sure that this is not done in a nice environment,
but one where each pump looks different, access is difficult and
   lighting is bad.

A company selling such a robot would make a huge fortune _today_
because there is a big incentive in doing so - not exposing workers
to dangerous and/or uncomfortable conditions. Repairing a leaking
pump in a hydrofluoric acid line (pick your least favourite poison
here) is a nasty business. So is climbing into a vessel to clean
or repair it; sadly, people die doing this every year, and this also
happens in industrialized countries. A robot which could do this job
would have a HUGE selling point.

So, if you know a company which makes such a robot, drop me a line.
Or tell OSHA (if you're in the US, or your local equivalent) and
ask them to require the use of such robot for such dangerous tasks.
It will be mandated within a few years.

If that's established technology, we can then discuss maintenance
requirements on these robots of yours, and decide if they can be
   sent to Mars.

   > For clarification, robots are able to conduct any manual task
   > humans are capable of.

   In principle, not in practice.
