   Alternatively, one could design a closed artificial ecological system with   
   robots that maintain (and, if/when necessary, rebuild) one another, as well as   
   the rest of the tech environment. There will still be an eventual attrition of   
   resources (probably),    
   but a properly planned mission can take this into consideration and prepare   
   for contingencies.
