   Nope, not a big problem for a small research station but a huge problem   
   if you are talking about a real colony building things.   
      
   Turning dirt into industrial steel or industrial aluminum to build   
   things takes lots of energy and you are not going to be building   
   log cabins on Mars.   
      
   It takes 20-25 MJ to produce 1 kilogram of iron from iron ore.   
      
   It takes 20-50 MJ to produce 1 kilogram of steel from iron.   
      
   So that is 40-75 MJ/kg of steel from dirt.   
      
   It takes 227-342 MJ to produce 1 kilogram of aluminum from bauxite.   
      
   It takes 7,590-7,755 MJ to produce 1 kilogram of electronic grade silicon.
