   I think what the OP had in mind was a more utilitarian weapon for survival   
   situations, rather then actual combat. I was thinking lasers because it   
   requires no ammo and no recoil. Water-cooled(most common solid in the   
   universe) though any cold liquid    
   would do in case water isn't available but other coolants are. it would come   
   with its own solar cells though soldiers would have a larger solar array. the   
   laser would be the most efficient varity. Adjustable power levels so you can   
   do other stuff like    
   set fire to stuff but not outright turn it into ashes.
