     I concur with 0something0- pulsed nukes, I'd say either Orion-style with   
   specialized uranium nukes or fusion. Fusion would lead naturally to later   
   constant-flow fusion rockets.

     Would they have developed naval guns in the first place, to want to adapt   
   the idea to spacecraft? They have loads of recoil, maybe just stick to   
   nuke-tipped missiles and maybe low-recoil gravel guns (precursors to   
   coilguns). I presume armor is also    
   much more primitive.
