Were you just leaning toward the       temple while walking toward it on a path that might not be level? Did you take       a pendulum with you? Did you use it to compare local gravitational vertical       with that at a distance?        You can use a weight on a string to determine local "down" and compare       against one at a distance to see if "down" where you are is the same as "down"       far away.                      Mark L.
