|    Re: Coilgun projectile velocities in spa    |

From: adam.w.krajewski@gmail.com              Sorry for not responding earlier, I had quite a lot of work at school.       Ok, so, at first, I need to give some data on my coilgun, because it seems I       haven't made some points clear.       So:       Projectile width: 50 mm as for now       "Caliber" of barrel: not yet defined, I am not sure if it's better to call       caliber at the bullet diameter or internal barrel diameter (in coilgun, there       can be a leap between projectile and barrel, right?       Width of a barrel as a whole (including all bracing, magnets, dust covers       etc): around 1 m, maybe a bit more       Lenght of barrel part that accelerates the projectile: 25 m       Muzzle velocity: 50 km/s, as for now.       Ok, so from your analysis it seems that the coilgun with such performance       couldn't exist, but I still have a few questions:       Could a superconductor as a projectile help?       How many Teslas strong magnet can be expected to exist in around 150 years       from now?       Which is better, wider barrel or thinner barrel?       How the shape of projectile affects the weapon? For example, could a disk       perform better than longer and thinner cylinder?       Then, how does the projectile width affect acceleration process?       And, could a circular coilgun connected to linear coilgun be more viable for       such velocities, or the magnets needed to bend the projectile path will render       it to heavy?       And, what would be max velocities from railguns?       At last, what would be the maximum performance for coilgun with such lenght,       caliber etc?       For now I don't have much time for analysing these topics by myself, sadly.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
