Like what, a rogue miniature black hole zips through the center at a large
fraction of c (to prevent killing everyone with gamma rays) and eats the Mind?

What other "natural event" could do this?

The inhabitants will have the same problems as those of Niven's original
Ringworld after the Superconductor Plague, only worse. They can't mine for
ores and will be dependent on machinery that can work without the Mind's
   assistance, and will die in
droves as that breaks down. The survivors will try to reuse dead machinery but
I doubt that Civilization-level machinery will be amenable to a blacksmith's
   technology.

They won't be used to working in large groups to grow and harvest food
crops, either. That will take a great toll until they figure it out.

To me their only hope is that another Mind notices they haven't communicated
in a while and comes to investigate before they're all dead.
