   Phased arrays would produce a perfect, diffraction limited beam?  Really?    
   That seems odd.  Are you sure this is the case?     
      
   As for FELs, that was one of my main reasons for choosing that type of laser   
   over, say, a diode laser.  Although, I think thermal lending will still come   
   into play with optical components like focusing lenses and whatnot.  Thermal   
   lensing in the lasing    
   medium simply doesn't play a role, from what I gather.
