In the sense people use "woke" today (diversity, racism, gender, politics
on-screen), sci‑fi TV has been doing that since at least the 1960s, but the
word “woke” only started being widely applied to sci‑fi shows in the
   2010s culture‑war era.

Star Trek - The Original Series (1966) had a racially mixed bridge crew, a
Black woman in a senior role, a Russian crew member during the Cold War, and
the first interracial kiss on US TV, all conceived as deliberate social
   commentary.
