   I'm looking for an old movie or series where a wife escapes an abusive   
   husband. This describes a lot of movies and series, I know.   
      
   Here's what I remember, or think I remember:   
   It's set in Britain.   
   The wife moves into an old mansion that is so long unoccupied that everything   
   is covered with a thick layer of dust.   
   The wife is a somewhat mysterious woman, in the eyes of the inhabitants of the   
   village she has escaped to.   
   The abusive husband was rich, probably had a noble title of some sort--   
   knight? earl?   
   I think it was a series.  As the series progressed, we learned more and more   
   of the abuse by way of flashbacks.   
   The husband eventually finds her (of course!)   
   I think there was more violence.   
   It's eventually resolved in favour of the wife; perhaps because the husband   
   dies.   
      
   Sorry for the vagueness; I saw it about 20 years ago (even that might be off   
   by a few years).   
   I want see it again.  Ideas, anyone?
