   A coming-of-age story set in the criminal underworld of Shanghai in the 1930s   
   and directed by one of China's foremost directors. Opening with a lethal drug   
   deal gone wrong, the young boy of the story is then appointed the servant of   
   the gang boss's    
   mistress who also sings in a club.   
      
   The boss's mistress is always the main ingredient in a violent cocktail in   
   crime movies and it doesn't matter where the drama unfolds. This is an   
   excellent, rich, and lavish production about the 1930s in Shanghai and   
   completely credible to the ending    
   that leaves you hanging.   
      
   Directed by Zhang Yimov from a script by Bi Feiyu, Cinematography by Lü Yue   
   and music by Du Yuan. Starring Gong Li, Li Baotian, and Li Xuejian, among   
   others.
