From: wlah...@gmail.com              Hey,              A remake of 1941's I Wake Up Screaming that was directed by H Bruce       Humberstone and starred Betty Grable, Victor Mature, Laird Cregar, Carole       Landis, and Elisha Cook Jr. The story is of a police detective who is obsessed       with a woman who is murdered. A        similar theme shows up in Otto Preminger's Laura – made in 1944 – as well       as other films. One interesting note is that there's a story that says this       was supposed to be Jean Gabin's first Hollywood film and that makes sense with       the film noirs Gabin        made in France in the 1930s – such as Port of Shadows and Le jour se lève       both directed by Marcel Carné, Jean Renoir's La Bête Humaine, and Julien       Duvivier's Pépé le Moko, among others.              Why films get remade is always a mystery. In 1936, Warner Bros wanted to       re-release The Maltese Falcon made in 1931 and the Hays Office nixed the idea       because there was too much pre-Code material in that pre-Coder. So Warner Bros       made a new version        titled Satan Met A Lady directed by Willian Dieterle and more than likely to       try and cash in on Dash Hammett's fans created by the growing franchise of The       Thin Man. The only mystery in Satan Met A Lady is who is more annoying: Warren       Williams or Bette        Davis?              While the resolution of the tale is somewhat different in Vicki than in I Wake       Up Screaming, the cast just doesn't compare to the original.              Directed by Harry Horner from a script by Dwight Taylor based on the novel by       Steve Fisher. Cinematography by Milton R Krasner and music by Leigh Harline.       Starring Jeanne Crain, Jean Peters, Elliot Reid, and Richard Boone, among       others.              --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05        * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2)    |
