I do not find the predominence of male characters implausible given the
   implied setting.

As for the characters themselves, yes they are all perfectly plausible.

But, as described, they feel a little... typical. Like, you had them
sent over from central casting, or something. "Okay, I need one old sea
   dog, one psychopath, two..."

Also, although I have no problems with the Bosun being male, if she was
female, I don't see why the reason "grandpa hasn't fucked her" has to be
an issue. Maybe she wanted to keep their relationship professional, and
   did so. No big whoop.

   As an aside...
In Black Fag I have decided that there are female space marines at about
a 5-1 split. (Which makes them more common than the female space
pirates, for whom I have been using 10-1 as my baseline, varying the
ratio over time based on changing circumstances.)

I think that space marines would lean more to the current Air Force
attitude than the current Marine attitude, and high physical strength
would be a lower priority. "Fit geeks" is the ideal I've been aiming
   for.

The 'rare as hens teeth' one for me, is the female 'steelskin warriors'
from my Cultivator Universe. The amount of active body mass (ie, muscle
tissue) required to support the nanobot colonies needed for the bioarmor
   is too high.
