I have no intention whatsoever of using their actual names, except in some
specific cases. Seton and Kineson and DuKane HAVE to have those names to make
the references stick. Even then they aren't Richard, or Kimball, or
   'Blackie'. (and yes I do
actually know how to spell the original)

Other characters, I'm not really using the character qua character, just the
outline to hang details on. I have no intention of making people say "aha,
he's supposed to be Captain Picard". No. If they do that I have failed.
   Modeled on Picard or not,
I do not intend him as a Picard reference.

Now, if they recognize the physical description of the female captain of
another ship (which I intend to copy verbatim from the original) with
alliterative initials, but who isn't otherwise named or a character, that's
fine. She IS a deliberate Honor
Harrington reference. But she won't be a character or have her own story.

The closest I will come is that the hero's grandfather is a Captain Kirk
clone. or at least a Captain Kirk stereotype clone.
